Judo Section

The Judo section is open to all Sports and Social Club members (including retired officers) of what ever ability.

Full details of current members of the Judo Section are held on RH JUDO on the police screens and training venues.

John Tierney can advise you of any training venues in your area if you do not have access to the help screen.

The Section attends the National Championships which are usually held in September throughout the country.  There are also opportunities to represent the Police UK Squad in National and International competitions.  There are training weekends opens to any member to attend and chances to be graded.

Training Camps

West Yorkshire Police training Centre in Wakefield on 13th 14th and 15th March 2009 - contact John Tierney for costs.  

Spanish training camp which will be at Miriam Blascoe and Nikki Fairbrother's club in Alicante.  Planned to depart Monday 20th April 2009 and returning Thursday 23rd April 2009. It will be a self financing event for those who wish to attend, there will be some PSUK funding for those who currently hold the Number 1 or 2 spot at their weight in PSUK. We are looking to find a good value hotel and have people fly from their local airport to Alicante, where we can all meet. If you require any further details please contact - John Tierney.

2009-2010

National PSUK Training.

Northumbria Police Judo Section continue to send a strong team to PSUK training weekends. Over the last few years the events have been based at three main locations Cardiff, Bramshill and Manchester. During the training weekends Northumbria Police Judo Players have been involved in session coached by Neil ADAMS ( World/European champion & Olympic  medalist), Katsuhiko KASHIWAZAKI (World and Olympic champion) and    
Part of this years training program also  included  competitive team events against The Welsh National Team, a select GB team, GB Universities and the strong London Area Team. Numerous Northumbria officer were involved in these fights.

2009 National Championships

The 2009 National Championships was hosted by North Wales, although  injuries prevented some of Northumbria officers attending the section still returned with 3 medals.

Area Training

Northern Area Squad training is held monthly for the most senior player in the area to compete together. The session are very hard and the competitive level is high. National standard players attend the session with numerous full GB team members attending. In addition to Northumbria Police Officers attending the session the event is coached by a Northumbria Police Officer, John Tierney.

At the moment the judo section are looking to bring a training weekend to the North East, we have looked a numerous venues and fully intend to host a 2011 training weekend in Newcastle.

The Northumbria Police Judo section continues to be a small but strong and enthusiastic team.
Over the last year membership has increased resulting in the upcoming National Police Training weekend in Cardiff (Nov 2011) being well attended by the Northumbria Officers.

In addition to attending Police events some of the Northumbria Players are part of the Northern Area Judo Squad. This squad fights in national events throughout GB and has a very good reputation due to its strength in depth.

For the year 2010-2011 Pc John Tierney (D3 NPT) achieved nation judo accolade by winning the British Judo Association Performance Development Coach of the year.
During the award ceremony Pc Tierney’s attachment to the Northumbria Police Judo Section was mentioned as a strong extension to his national coaching achievement.

In 2012 the section hope to see Pc Keith Harbottle achieved his 1st Dan (black belt). Pc Harbottle has been working tirelessly on the judo mat and is only one small step from achieving black belt status.

All of the Northumbria officers are members of The British Judo Association the governing body for Judo in the UK
